The 1921 UK Census is Available on Ancestry

I can’t believe three years have already passed since the release of the 1921 UK Census! These records were recently released on Ancestry.com!

Just like the 1911 Census, the census used a separate sheet for each household. The head of the household was required to fill out the form and members of the household were required by law to either give the head of household the information or to apply for a separate confidential return. If someone requested their own return, the head of household would still include them on their form but would only list the name and relationship to the head of the household of the person requesting their own form.

One great feature of the 1921 census is the address of employment. The 1911 census only provided the place of birth for each person. If a visitor was enumerated, the census did not provide their current residence, only their place of birth. The address of employment provides a clue as to where they lived and can help lead to other genealogical records. This is especially helpful for people who have moved far away from their place of birth.

My post from 3 years ago mentions the questions on the 1921 Census.

My great-grandfather left England right after the 1911 Census. However, I was able to find several of his siblings on the 1921 census. The level of detail for the address of employment varied, with some giving a street address and some only giving the town. One person worked on a farm and it listed the name of the owner of the farm.

If you, like me, were waiting patiently for this record set to be available on a subscription basis rather than pay-per-view, the time has come!
